Coefficient of Inbreeding

The coefficient of inbreeding (COI) is a formula used to calculate the probability that a puppy will inherit two identical copies of a given gene descending from an ancestor that appears on both sides of the puppy’s pedigree.

The purpose of the COI is to give breeders a way to assess the degree of inbreeding based on the pedigrees of potential sire and dam. COI in the STCA Pedigree Database is calculated to 20 generations.
